Easy Poker Basics Explained
Poker is a game using the internationally recognized standard playing cards pack of 52. It can have four to ten players, and any one of them can be tasked as the dealer for a round. The cards are then dealt to the dealer's left.
Poker bets are placed by players based on who they think is holding the highest hand among them. Bets are pooled in the pot.
Poker hands and rankings recognized around the world are as follows:
1. straight flush, consisting of five completely sequenced cards of similar suits, in which an Ace - when used - functions as the highest or the lowest card; 2. four of a kind, consisting of four cards of similar rank and one auxiliary card; 3. full house, consisting of three cards of similar rank and another two cards of similar rank; 4. flush, consisting of five cards of similar suits; 5. straight, consisting of five completely sequenced cards of any suit array; 6. three of a kind, consisting of three cards of similar rank and two auxiliary cards; 7. two pair, consisting of two sets of two cards with similar rank and an auxiliary card; 8. one pair, consisting of two cards of similar rank and three auxiliary cards; and 9. high card or the card with the topmost value in a mixed hand.
Among the same hands, rank is established through the highest card in the primary section of the combination.
Poker players decide on whether to call a bet, raise the stakes or fold depending on their hand and their perception of their opponents' hands. To call a bet is to make an equivalent bet. To raise is to make a higher bet. To fold, however, is to bow out of the game, losing all previous bets.
The goal of poker players in the game is to goad all other players to fold. They do this through bluffing. They try to convince opponents that their hand is the highest, and even raise the stakes to seem to prove this. Opponents who are easily scared off will tend to back off.
A round ends when all players have taken their turn. Any players remaining will have a show of hands to discover the best hand. If a player has successfully pushed all other players to fold, that surviving player wins.
These are the basics of playing poker. They are not difficult at all. It is, however, more difficult to explain how to discern a bluff from the truth. That takes years of poker playing to learn.
